Ms. Cotten-- Could our current events be an article from the internet. We'd like to do something on the earthquake in New Zealand but the article in the News-Record is very small. We'd like to find one online.

Yes. Current events can come from the internet, magazines, newspapers, etc. Just as long as it's a "current event" deemed under the guidelines we discussed in class. The information about the earthquake or glacier would be just fine.
